  • MYSA and the Minnesota Thunder

BTFC families and interested 0809 Minnesota Thunder Academy participants,

We have been fielding questions over the past few weeks about MYSA's recent announcement in their electronic newsletter and on their website.

In case you haven't seen it, it is copied below for you.

The Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) would like its members to know that MYSA has notified the Minnesota Thunder and the Minnesota Lightning that it will not be renewing its current partnership agreements, which expire August 31, 2008. Despite the decision to not renew these agreements, MYSA believes it is important for a link to exist between all of our youth soccer players and the men’s and women’s professional soccer teams in the state and will therefore be looking at new ways for MYSA to work with the Minnesota Thunder and Minnesota Lightning professional soccer teams.

MYSA represents approximately 80,000 youth soccer players and 140 member clubs in the state and can not sponsor an organization, like the Thunder Academy, which treats some of MYSA’s players and clubs differently than the rest.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact MYSA Executive Director Candace Daley at candacedaley@mnyouthsoccer.org.

We would like to clarify that now that the Minnesota Thunder has a youth system in place, regardless of the fact that it is a separate 501(c)3 corporation from the for-profit Thunder pro team and Thunder soccer camp business, MYSA's current contract with the Thunder cannot continue to exist.  MYSA is responsible for 140 Minnesota clubs.  These clubs pay MYSA dues and MYSA, under the existing contract with the Thunder, gives sponsorship dollars to the Thunder.  We're sure you can see the conflict here for MYSA.

With this said though, MYSA supports professional soccer in this state and is committed to working with the Thunder to establish a new partnership.

How does this non-renewal of the current MYSA/Thunder partnership agreement affect the new Minnesota Thunder Academy (MTA)?  It doesn't.  MTA Regional and Elite Academies will be MYSA affiliate clubs and teams in these programs will be able to participate in MYSA leagues and MYSA tournaments should they choose to do so.  We will expect to be treated no differently by MYSA than any other affiliate club.

We hope this helps to clarify any uncertainties that the recent MYSA announcement has caused in our club.

Good luck the rest of this summer and we'll see you all at tryouts!

    BTFC Board
